GRANDVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOG MARCHING BAND

The Grandville Bulldog Marching Band is an award-winning band that performs at numerous competitions on a local, state, and national level each fall. The marching band also plays during half-time at home football games. In 2005, the Grandville Marching Band earned second place at the Otsego Creative Arts Marching Band Contest, also taking home the awards for Best Music and Best Drumline. The band was the winner of Flight I competition and took home all caption awards at the 2005 Hudsonville, Jenison, and Reeths-Puffer Invitationals. At the 2005 MSBOA District Marching Band Festival, the band earned a rating of Division I, the highest rating, for the 39th consecutive year. To end the successful season, the Marching Band placed sixth in Flight I at MCBA State Finals Competition.

 

The Grandville Marching Band consistently earns high ratings and places among the top ten bands in Michigan. In 2004, the band placed fourth in the state in Flight I competition, our highest placement ever at MCBA State Finals, and earned second place in the category of music. The band also regularly competes at Bands of America Grand Nationals, and in 2004 earned a score of 74.85, the highest Nationals score in Grandville's history.

 


 

GRANDVILLE HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT BANDS

Grandville High School has four concert bands and a jazz band.

 

Symphonic Winds

The Symphonic Winds band is comprised of advanced musicians performing at the college level. Students are selected by the director based on playing proficiency.

 

Symphonic Band

Students are selected for the advanced-level Symphonic Band by the directors, based on playing proficiency.

 

Concert Band

Students chosen for Concert Band continue to develop skills associated with tone quality and technique. Concert Band is a performance oriented class. Students are selected by the directors based on playing proficiency.

 

Varsity Band

This band provides a concert band experience. Students continue to develop skills associated with tone quality and technique. Varsity Band is a performance oriented class.

 

Jazz Band

Membership in the high school Jazz Band is by audition only. Students must also be enrolled in one of the concert bands. The Jazz Band rehearses and performs pieces in various styles and from various periods in jazz and big-band developments.

 


 

MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDS

 

Middle School Concert Band

Students who have taken a full year of beginning band in sixth grade may sign up for seventh grade band. Students will have band every day. Grades are based on class participation and weekly practice cards showing time spent practicing at home. Middle school band is geared more toward performance, where beginning band was based on individual development. Students will continue to develop individual skills but will learn to balance and perform as a group. Seventh grade performances will include a Holiday Concert, Winter Concert, and District Band Festival. Attendance at all performances is required.

 

Middle School Jazz Band

The Grandville Middle School Jazz Band is for more advanced players and enrollment is by invitation. Students must also be enrolled in one of the concert bands. Students will learn the different jazz styles and rhythmic interpretation associated with jazz music. Students will be introduced to various jazz artists and their particular styles. Jazz Band is an exploratory class and will have less emphasis on performance.
