2008  |  Holst's First Suite: Expressions in E Flat
Music by Gustav Holst
The Grandville Marching Band performed Gustav Holst's "First Suite in E Flat" in four segments as their 2008 show, "Expressions in E Flat." Suite No. 1 in E Flat is considered a breakthrough composition because it was written specifically for wind band at a time when bands were still playing pieces originally scored for orchestras. The 3 movements of the suite are the Chaconne, the Intermezzo and the March. Following the opening segment, the Chaconne is smooth and lyrical, while the Intermezzo provides a quick and lively contrast. The March features two distinct melodies, which eventually combine into a strong finale.

The show closed with a rousing rendition of Shostakovich's landmark composition, "Symphony No. 5." Keeping with the theme, the color guard featured bold red and yellow flags, conjuring images of the Soviet flag.

Music by Peter Boyer
The 2006 show was based on "Ellis Island: The Dream of America," a Grammy-nominated orchestral composition by Peter Boyer which debuted in 2002. The music pays tribute to the experiences of American immigrants who emigrated from various European countries between 1911 and 1940. Music by David Gillingham
